Interesting Folk

I want one, only trouble is I doubt it manages 10mpg on a good day. In a similar vein, there was an old Airstream caravan in good condition but with ivy growing all over it in a garden near our motel.

A view upstream on a river we crossed - the view downstream was much the same but without the mountains as a backdrop!

We passed the Naval Air Station at Ventura. They had obviously struggled to find a use for some old planes and missiles so they mounted them on the roadside for people to ogle at. A Phantom, I believe - takes me back to my airfix model building days.

A F-14 Tomcat a la the original Top Gun movie. The whole display gave the birds somewhere to perch - as we pedalled away a crow landed on the sharp end of a Polaris missile 😉.

Cycling on the bike path along the beach at Manhattan Beach. The dark spot just below centre frame is Steve and Karen on their fully loaded Co-Motion tandem. We chatted to them when we caught them up. They have ridden the same Trans Am route that Steve and I did.

We bumped into Richard Oakes (he stopped when he noticed my Union Flag cycling top). Richard is here to compete in the Masters track cycling championship. He recently won the world title  in the UCI 50-54 world TT championships. We had a very nice chat - he and Steve have some shared contacts from the Manchester velodrome.

Quite a mixed riding day for us today. Some lengthy sections of CA 1 but also quite a lot of traffic free bike paths and quieter roads.  Virtually all of the main road had a good shoulder but the trouble is people park in it, forcing us out into the highway. Worse still, some of the surfers leave their drivers door open while they change, and workmen stick a road cone to the traffic side of their truck / trailer  both of which take up even more of the shoulder. I wasn't sorry when that section was over.

117km with 518m of ascent has brought us to Manhattan Beach.

We managed to bring our flight home forward to 24th - three more riding days plus one day to pack the bike.
