One Good Deed Deserves Another - Possibly???

Pilot boat outside the museum in Astoria (taken on my afternoon walk to the supermarket)

interesting rocks

it was a bit misly and murky for a good part of today

Eventually is brightened up a bit

Sign at our motel - we pass quite a few roadside cannabis sellers!

We rolled out of our motel at 07:00 or thereabouts this morning (we would have been a bit earlier but the coffee in reception wasn’t ready when it should have been). The first mile or so was on a bike trail alongside the old tramway but soon we were on the road. We have spent most of the day on Highway 101 – think Room 101 but with traffic 😉. However, for the first 30km or so we were turned onto a lesser road which was delightful, with tidy farms, reedy marshland and woods. It also had a bit of a hill. When we dropped down from that we were directed across 101 and onto a promenade for a mile or two – this was our first proper open view of the ocean - as opposed to looking across to islands across a saltwater channel. Soon after the prom we were on 101, which has been quite busy. I’m hoping it’s busy because we are on the Labour Day holiday weekend – think cycling up the A5 through North Wales on a bank holiday weekend!  I think we will be seeing a lot of 101 on this tour so we will see if it quietens down a bit from Tuesday?

Anyway, back to this morning – as we were leaving Astoria a small deer emerged from the bushes on a roundabout, closely followed by the sweetest young fawn – a real beauty.  They were close enough for Steve to hear the clatter of hooves on the tarmac 🙂. The fawn was doing that kind of prancing thing they do.

Eventually we stopped at a espresso shack for coffee and a muffin. While we were sat there on a low wall (some have picnic tables but not this one) I was looking at the vehicles in the queue and noticed a jeep was missing one of its wheelnuts. I’m sure the vehicle is specified to be safe with a couple missing (maybe not adjacent ones on the same wheel) but I walked over and told the driver anyway – he seemed appreciative.  Not long after that, someone else in the queue rolled down his window and asked where we were going – to which I replied ‘Mexico’, of course. He took out his wallet and passed me a $50 note. I thanked him profusely and said we would give that to our charity. Then he said that if we were giving that to charity we should have another $40 for ourselves and passed me a couple of $20 notes 🙂.

115km with 1117m of ascent has brought us to Tillamook, including a bit of tooing and froing to the supermarket while we were waiting for our room to be ready.
