Uh Oh, First Significant Mechanical Issue

Blog for Monday 12th

Grey pelicans bathing and preening on a (brackish?) lagoon at Gualala - there was another big group on the sea side of the shingle - maybe 500 altogether

A closer view - the black backed gull is an imposter

These pinky pampas type grasses are widespread, sometimes quite large patches of them

Not sure what this is outside our hotel but it's very nice

View from our AirBnB near Point Reyes Station. You should see hazy mountains way beyond the trees and a wide channel of water- it is getting more hazy by the minute.

I went for a short walk before dinner yesterday evening. There were some starling sized birds making some weird noises - possibly related species to our starling? While I was struggling to get a picture of one of them I stumbled across a humming bird - they are really difficult to photograph unless they are on a feeder so no luck there.

We had our first significant mechanical issue today - a spoke has broken in the rear wheel (for no good reason I can think of).  We are on the run in to the Golden Gate Bridge in the morning and there are three bike shops en-route - hopefully we can get it sorted quickly and efficiently. We have accommodation booked several days ahead including one which is over £300 for one night and no cancellation refund!  We just have to stay on schedule. Of course, we can ride the bike with one spoke missing without any issues (I have disconnected the rim brake because we do all our rear wheel braking with a disc brake) - the worry is if more spokes follow suit.

Quite a tough day today, not helped by a closed road and detour to get to our AirBnB. Now we are here the power is off so no WiFi, no charging batteries, etc.  I had a shower by the light of the front light off the bike - of course, that particular aspect makes no difference to Steve.  139km with 2009m of ascent has brought us to Point Reyes Station.

  1. We've had the white flower in the garden. Tree Poppy. I had to check as I wasn't sure and it's a California tree poppy. 😊
